Artist Bio -

Based in Amsterdam, Daniel Green is a young saxophonist and composer who draws from his West Coast, Vancouver roots. From his inspirations across the jazz tradition and beyond, he blends jazz, contemporary music, folk, and free improvisation. Always seeking to elevate the creativity of his bandmates, his music uses melody and emotion to ground exploratory improvisations.

A recent graduate from McGill University in Montreal, Daniel is now studying at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Ben van Gelder and Simon Rigter. He has performed in large ensembles featuring guest artists like Dick Oatts, Ben Wendel, and Percy Pursglove and has led his own bands in venues like Frankie’s and Tyrant Studios in Vancouver, as well as Upstairs and La Sala Rossa in Montréal.

Current Projects

  • Roots and Branches is the newest project from the young Canadian saxophonist and composer Daniel Green. Drawing equally from the jazz tradition as from singer-songwriters and free improvisers, this 10-piece chamber ensemble blurs collective improvisations with intricate compositions and solos. The band approaches forms with great freedom and spontaneity that allows the unique musical voices of its members to shine.

This music is written from a deeply personal process of seeking connection with our environments that sometimes sustain and inspire us, or sometimes burden and disempower us.

  • The Daniel Green Quintet is a collaboration of longtime friends, coming together to spontaneously explore jazz standards and original music. By breaking down the traditional roles found in a jazz small group, they open the door for explosive interpretations of timeless pieces.
